Way back in 2005, I was working at Target and bought a PSP on release day. I was young, had money, and no responsibilities; it’s just what you did. Wipeout Pure was one of the launch titles I picked up. I had a DS, which I also purchased at launch a few months prior, and comparing the graphics was like looking at the jump from PS1 to PS2, no contest. But as we know, Nintendo doesn’t rely on graphics to sell systems and we all know how the DS/PSP generation of portable gaming turned out. Now, on to Wipeout Pure. Its beautiful, one of the best looking games made for the PSP. It features the same kind of gameplay you’d expect from the series and has a lot of excellent electronic music to keep you moving. The game also features wireless local multiplayer for up to 8 racers. Since it’s so cheap, buy couple copies for you and your buddies and get racing.

Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon! With my last post being LocoRoco, I found it only fitting to have Patapon next. With help from developer Pyramid, SCE Japan has yet again created a game boasting originality and fantastic art direction. In the game, you serve as the god of the titular Patapon tribe as they cross the world in order to lay their eyes on “it”, granting them eternal happiness. Give commands on beat with the music and your minions will march, defend, and attack anything in their path. String a combo together and they will enter fever mode, granting stat boosts, get off beat and your commands will go unheeded while the Patapons get confused. Grab some headphones and enjoy this trance-inducing game.

Genre: Platformer, Puzzle

It’s bright, cute, quirky, easy to play, and has catchy music; it’s everything you want in a “Japanese” game. LocoRoco are little blob creatures and their world is being invaded. It’s up to you to help them by turning their entire planet upsidedown and letting gravity do the rest. The controls consist of tilting the playfield left or right to guide the blobs through each of the 40 levels. They can jump and have a few other abilities, but that’s about it. Some may find this too simplistic, but most of the enjoyment comes from a fun happy game that you can work through leisurely and doesn’t push too hard.

Considered one of the best platformers on the PSP, Daxter is a must have game for collectors. Released after Jak 1 and leading into the story for Jak 2 for PS2, it features to same tight controls and great level design fans have grown to expect from the popular Naughty Dog franchise. If you are looking for a game that showcases what the PSP can do, this is it.
